Julian Maynard Smith is a performance artist and co-founder of the London-based performance company Station House Opera. Previously making solo work, as well as performing with the influential British performance art company The Ting: Theatre of Mistakes, he formed Station House Opera with Miranda Payne and Alison Urquhart in 1980 in order to develop a performance practice combining sculptural, architectural abd theatrical elements. Following their first work, Natural Disasters in 1980, the company's performances have been seen widely in Europe, Japan, Australia and North America. Since their inception, Station House Opera have created more than twenty five works for galleries, theatres and numerous outdoor sites. These include Drunken Madness (1983), in which performers were flighted within a system of interdependent platforms and pulleys, Cuckoo (1987) and Bastille Dances (1989), in which a company of forty performers created and dismantled an edifice of 8,000 breeze blocks over nine days. Since Roadmetal Sweetbread (1999) the company's work has engaged with increasingly complex interweaving of site, live performance and video, including works such as their recent and current performances The Other Is You and Play On Earth, which are simultaneously performed and mediated across geographically diverse locations.
