About the play

Everyone is familiar with the story of Snow-White. A beautiful story, right? The wicked get what they deserve, the righteous theirs.
But what if the evil stepmother suffers from the incurable disease of modern women, vanity? What if she and Snow-White are competitors, equally vain, in a world where only one thing is of value to women, being adored by others?
Knowledge and a Girl, by Howard Barker, spoke to me. It described me and mine, our shared obsession of our looks, and how many men will be spellbound by our appearances. Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? – asks not the wicked stepmother but the newspaper, the yearbook committee, the average reality show. Time is ticking away. One day the time of our rule over men by looks will be over. We’ll be old, ugly, and the Snow-Whites of the world will take our place in the spotlight.
I fear that now, more than ever, with growing unemployment, women will trade on their looks. Take their place as trophies, as accessories to the providing male.

Kolbrún Björt Sigfúsdóttir graduated from the Iceland Academy of the Arts, Drama, Theory and practice, 2008. Since then she’s taken to directing a range of shows, from musicals to site specific performances.
