About the play |
The Academy is delighted to be celebrating two anniversaries as part of its autumn season: the 21st birthday of Howard Barker's renowned company The Wrestling School, and the 100th anniversary of the first performance anywhere in the world of a Chekhov play in English - The Seagull, in Glasgow on 2nd November 1909. As part of the world-wide 21 for 21 festival, final year Acting students will present a staged reading of Barker's Uncle Vanya, his 'renegotiated' version of Chekhov's original - Barker's character of Uncle Vanya refuses to play by the rules of 'the Chekhovian half-light' and leaves the world of the play to create his own future.
21 October, 7.30pm Chandler Studio Theatre, Uncle Vanya by Howard Barker, directed by Neil Doherty
2nd - 7th November New Athenaeum Theatre, The Seagull by Anton Chekhov in a version by Stuart Paterson adapted from the original 1909 translation by George Calderon, directed by Hugh Hodgart
