About the play

PhotoThe Castle is one of Howard Barker's most acclaimed plays and was originally produced by the RSC in 1985 with a cast including Ian McDiarmid, Harriet Walter and Penny Downie. This scathing satire of sexuality and war is set in the time of the crusades and is a play of astonishing intellectual breadth, verbal dexterity, wit and passion.

Join actors from the current RSC Ensemble for a staged reading followed by a post-show discussion of Barker’s inspiring impact on contemporary theatre-making, lead by Jeanie O’Hare, RSC Company Dramaturg, 21/21 producer Sarah Goldingay and theatre critic Mark Brown.

The Royal Shakespeare Company based in Stratford upon Avon, the company’s repertoire includes both Shakespeare and new work, supported by a broad range of education work and events.  They perform at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford, in London, Newcastle and on tour in the UK and beyond.

The RSC is an ensemble company. Everyone in the company, from directors, actors and writers to production, administrative, technical and workshop staff all collaborate in the RSC's distinctive approach to theatre.
