OUR SHOES ARE RED/THE PERFORMANCE LAB was founded in 1993 by its artistic director Devon Allen. The lab’s emphasis is on development, making work with scope, vigor, and excellence, collaboration, and innovative rehearsal techniques. Its mission is to create exceptional, engaging art for its audiences, and to create a unique collective working environment for professional artists and artists-in-training who are challenged to investigate the actual way in which we make art. We develop new work, examine the classic canon, and give voice to exceptional writers rarely produced. 
While we work in institutions happily, we are not an institution. While the lab occupies space and time, it is best to consider the lab as a free-floating creative force whose members come together to make art wherever and whenever lab members converge. The lab has touched down in Allentown, PA; London, U.K.; Durham, NC; Bloomsburg, PA; Kilkenny, Ireland; New York, NY; Chicago, Ill; and Portland, OR, among other sites. The lab is currently based in Portland, Oregon, USA, and is planning projects in Portland, New Haven, and Easton for 2009/2010.
