About the play

Poster

What does it mean to save face? Why do looks sometimes make us feel ashamed? What do we mean by 'losing face'?
Wounds to the Face looks at these questions through a series of woundings - by cosmetics, plastic surgery, political propaganda, history, philosophy, desire and deception  - and it becomes immediately evident that merely to have a face [or not] is to enter into an inexorably cruel, and sometimes comic play of representation and identity.
In keeping with Barker’s call for the need to fragment audience response, this production of Wounds is set in the sealed environment of a quasi-crime scene, in which the characters’ complex and morally ambiguous predicaments are briefly animated.
