Masque du jour (“Mask of the day”) was a short performance piece devised in 2004/05, deriving from research on the artistic and structural consequences and traces of the commedia dell’arte, as subsequently visible in opera, literature, film, etc. In our practice, we picked up masks as a major characteristic of the commedia, and investigated performatively what masks mean nowadays: What is a mask, what are the different functions and implications of masks, etc.? How do maks generate meaning on stage? We were particularly interested in presenting a broad variety of masks and looking at the actual process of taking them on and off. We set the performance in a kind of “social event” situation involving a buffet and a formal dance. Structurally, we decided to base the performance on a soundtrack which I had compiled and edited from a variety of styles, atmospheres and rhythms. The soundtrack organized the performance as well as setting the tone for the different types of masks and their uses. A second part of this performance was directed by Mareike Hölker and dealt with aspects of comedy based on the particular comic strategies of the commedia dell’arte. Cast: Laura Hörath, Nele Kießling, Annette Koller, Robin Krause, Nora Otte, Julia Verführt, Lea Seibert, Katharina Standke, Sina Wachenfeld. Documents Video-Clip (complete performance) Photos
