Glaubensbekenntnisse (Creeds) was a collaborative project between the Institut für Medien und Theater, Universität Hildesheim, the Stadttheater Hildesheim and the Jakobikirche Hildesheim. It presented a wide range of material derived from prior research into a variety of confessions of beliefs, some of them religious, some political, some mundane, some superstitious. We were interested in the theatricality of making one's beliefs public within an established context and ritualistic certainty, or as a challenge to normative boundaries of acceptable articulations of belief. We were also interested in the strategies and consequences of those creeds, creating a sense of a spiritual community, propaganda, provocation, self-fulfilling prophesies, celebration, faking authenticity etc. The project involved performers of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, and invited an extra guest from the general public in each of the six performances that took place in one of the local churches, the Jakobi-Kirche.
